An Azerbaijani Embraer aircraft flying from Baku to Grozny was forced to alter its flight path due to a missile attack on Ukraine, choosing an atypical route and crashing near Aktau, likely colliding with a flock of birds. This incident might have been avoided had Russia not closed the airspace over the North Caucasus due to missile strikes on Ukraine.
The map clearly shows that Aktau, the city in Kazakhstan where the plane crashed, is located on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea, while Baku and Grozny are situated to the west of the Caspian.
The Azerbaijani aircraft had to change its route and circumnavigate the entire Caspian Sea because strategic aviation planes from Russia were conducting "Christmas" missile strikes on Ukraine from the Caspian basin on the morning of December 25.
At that time, the sky over the Caucasus was partially closed to flights. The crash would not have occurred if the aircraft had followed its regular course.

Notably, several families were on board the crashed Embraer, traveling from Azerbaijan to their relatives in Russia, with plans to celebrate the New Year together. This information has been reported by Russian media. The names of the Gistaryov brothers and their sister are mentioned, who are believed to have perished in the crash.
Putin expressed condolences to the families of those who died in the crash, which he personally caused. It is also reported that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev cut short his visit to Russia due to the tragedy.

On December 25, an AZAL airline aircraft crashed in Kazakhstan while operating a flight from Baku to Grozny. The official cause of the crash is reported to be a bird strike during flight, which led to technical issues on board and forced the crew to decide on an emergency landing in Aktau. There were 67 passengers and 5 crew members on board the aircraft. According to Rosaviation, the accident occurred around 08:30 in the eastern Caspian Sea. The commander of the aircraft decided to change the route due to the emergency situation and land at an alternate airfield.
Rescue services in Kazakhstan conducted search and rescue operations, and the transport ministries of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Preliminary reports indicate that 25 individuals survived the crash, including a child. 22 of the injured were hospitalized at the Mangystau Regional Hospital in Aktau.
Russian media reports different figures: 10 people died after the Embraer 190 fell at Aktau airport. 25 individuals were taken to hospitals, among them four children. In total, there were 37 Azerbaijanis, 6 Kazakhs, 3 Kyrgyz citizens, and 16 Russian citizens on board the aircraft. According to preliminary information, there were no Ukrainians on the flight.
