The Russian army has carried out a new missile strike on the port infrastructure of Odesa. As a result of the attack, two workers were injured, and a civilian vessel sustained damage. Ukraine is urging the international community to respond to the systematic strikes on ports.
According to Oleg Kiper, the head of the Odesa Regional State Administration, on March 1, Russian troops launched a missile attack on Odesa, injuring two port workers.
The missile strike resulted in damage to the port infrastructure as well as to a civilian ship flying the flag of Panama, owned by a European company. Both injured individuals are port employees, and they are receiving medical assistance. Emergency services are on-site working to mitigate the impact of the strike.
Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Russian forces have struck Ukrainian ports more than 50 times. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, over 300 port infrastructure facilities and 23 civilian vessels have been affected by the attacks. The shelling has destroyed over 100,000 tons of agricultural products.
Only in the fall, Russia damaged four vessels, including those transporting grain to Egypt, corn to Italy, and humanitarian cargo from the UN for Palestine. In response to these attacks, Ukraine has called on the International Maritime Organization to send an independent monitoring mission to oversee the situation in the ports of Odesa.
It is worth noting that Odesa had not yet recovered from the massive drone strike by Russia that took place on the evening of February 28. The Odesa region was targeted by drones. As a result of the attack, there was one fatality and three people were injured. The city experienced damage to a residential building, a private enterprise, and a sports facility, with both passenger and freight vehicles belonging to residents being destroyed.
