One of the largest and fastest meteor showers, the Leonids, will be visible to Ukrainians this weekend. Don’t miss this spectacular celestial event!

A meteor shower is recorded from early November to the first few days of December, but its peak is anticipated in the coming days—from Saturday to Monday.
Одно из самых ярких и стремительных явлений: украинцы в выходные смогут увидеть метеорный дождь Леониды.

In Ukraine, throughout November, one of the largest meteor showers can be observed. Its peak is expected in the coming days, according to data from EarthSky.

The Leonid meteor shower began on November 3 and will continue for an entire month, lasting until December 2. At the same time, in the next few days, residents of Ukraine will have the opportunity to witness a more brilliant meteor shower, as its peak is anticipated from November 16 to 18.

Notably, this is one of the brightest and most active meteor showers, capable of providing "viewers" with an exciting spectacle of the autumn night sky.

The meteor stream is formed from the remnants of the Tempel-Tuttle comet. Its radiant—the point in the sky from which meteors seem to emanate—is located in the constellation Leo, hence its name.

"Leonids typically exhibit moderate activity, averaging around 15 meteors per hour. However, every 33 years, when the Tempel-Tuttle comet comes close to Earth, the shower becomes significantly more intense, potentially transforming into a true "meteor storm" with thousands of meteors per hour. The last such storm occurred in 2001," the report states.

The speed of these meteors is approximately 71 kilometers per second, making this meteor shower one of the fastest existing.

Recall that on August 13, it was reported that a northern lights and meteor shower of the Perseids was observed over Ukraine. The northern lights were seen in the sky above Pavlograd and Kharkiv. According to experts, several factors need to align to witness this phenomenon: a cloudless sky and a geomagnetic storm.
