"Busification" has been chosen as the Word of the Year 2024 in Ukraine. What other terms gained popularity during this time?

According to the "Misolovo" dictionary, other contenders for the title of Word of the Year included "SOC," "Kursk Operation," "fatigue," "negotiations," and "MSEC."

"Busification" has been named the main word of 2024 according to the dictionary of modern Ukrainian language and slang "Myslovo". This neologism, which refers to forced mobilization through an expedited process, was at the center of public attention in the past year.

"The term highlights issues with mobilization, where quantitative indicators overshadow qualitative ones, and human rights (sometimes along with common sense) take a back seat," the press release states.

The word is derived from the root "bus," meaning "minibus," combined with the suffix "-ification," indicating an action (from Latin facio — I do). Similar forms exist in words like "Russification" or "verification."

Among other contenders for the word of the year were the following terms:

  • SOCH (unauthorized abandonment of a unit) — an issue arising from difficulties in troop organization.
  • Kursk operation — a Ukrainian military operation on the territory of the Russian Federation.
  • fatigue — as a reaction to prolonged warfare.
  • negotiations — a desire aimed at achieving a ceasefire or a freeze as a result of war exhaustion;
  • MSEC — scandals related to corruption in medical commissions.
  • populism — with a focus on the onset of discussions about elections in connection with the "National Cashback" and "Thousand of Zelensky" programs.
  • Magura — a sea drone that shifted the balance of power in the Black Sea.
  • lalochezia — the use of profanity to relieve stress.
  • quadrunners — a new subculture popular among the youth.

The "Myslovo" dictionary has been documenting the most interesting linguistic phenomena for 12 years, adding neologisms, slang, and other new words to its database. The choice of word of the year is based on its popularity and social significance. Users submit words and their definitions.
