Over 50% of Ukrainians say they are willing to endure the war for as long as it takes, according to a recent survey.

Over the course of a year, the number of Ukrainians willing to endure the Russian-Ukrainian war has decreased by 16%, according to sociological data. At the same time, there has been an increase in the number of residents in the east and south who share this perspective.
Более 50% украинцев заявили, что готовы терпеть войну столько, сколько потребуется, согласно результатам опроса.

From December 2 to 17, researchers from the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KMIS) surveyed 985 Ukrainians and found that the percentage of those willing to endure the war with Russia for an indefinite period has decreased to 57%. In the fall of 2024, this figure was at 63%, and even earlier it was 73%. The results of the survey and the identified trends are detailed in a report published on January 2 on the KMIS portal.

Survey on the War — KMIS Results

During a telephone survey, sociologists asked citizens how long they were willing to "endure the war." The results obtained in December 2024 indicated that just over half supported the option of "as long as necessary" — 57%.

The infographic published by the sociologists shows that the highest proportion of those supporting this option was in December 2023 to February 2024 — 73%. The results from the fall of 2024 showed a 10% decline, while the December results indicated an additional "minus" 6%. The total annual decline amounts to "minus" 16%.

Describing the results, analysts also noted a 6% increase in the number of Ukrainians who were uncertain about how long they could endure the situation. The indicator "hard to say" rose from 12% to 18%. According to KMIS, this reflects a growing uncertainty in citizens' positions.

Two additional graphs illustrate trends based on region and family income. The results show that the higher the income, the longer citizens are willing to endure the war. Regional results indicate that in the south and east, the percentage of those willing to live in a state of war for an indefinite period has increased. Specifically, in the east, it rose from 38% to 51%, and in the south from 50% to 57%. Meanwhile, opposite trends are observed in the center and west.

It is important to note that KMIS analysts indicated a margin of error based on the percentage: if the figures are 50% or more, the deviation is "plus-minus" 4%.

Additionally, in the final days of 2024, Ukrainian journalist Dmitry Gordon announced the possibility of ending the Russian-Ukrainian war on December 30. According to his estimates, the likelihood of achieving peace through mysterious negotiations reached 90-95%. On the evening of December 30, when it became clear that there were no signs of negotiations, the journalist explained that he had received information from anonymous sources about a potential meeting between newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Following this, the Russians staged a demarche, announcing demands that no one agreed to, which allegedly led to the cancellation of the meeting.
