Don't be misled! Trump's interest in Greenland is actually detrimental to Ukraine. Let’s explain why.

Donald Trump's son released a provocative video about his trip to Greenland. In the footage, residents of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, wearing MAGA hats, express that living in the United States is their dream and send greetings to President Trump. However, the Danes have already responded, suggesting that Donald Trump Jr. may have been speaking with homeless individuals. Even if Trump is not entirely serious about his territorial ambitions in Europe, this presents a highly dangerous situation for Ukraine. It illustrates that such claims can originate not just from fringe figures like Putin.
Не стоит радоваться! Интерес Трампа к Гренландии крайне неблагоприятен для Украины: объясним, почему это так.

Trump's son released a provocative video about his trip to Greenland. In it, residents of the Greenlandic capital, Nuuk, wearing MAGA-branded baseball caps, express that living in the USA is their dream and send greetings to President Trump. However, the Danes have responded: Donald Trump Jr. likely spoke with homeless individuals. Even if Trump is not entirely serious about his territorial claims in Europe, this presents an extremely dangerous situation for Ukraine. He demonstrates that such claims can originate not only from marginalized figures like Putin.

“God bless you. You are so strong; we are proud to be with you,” says a charming girl in the video. However, she is dressed rather scantily.

After watching the video shared by Trump Jr., one might get the impression that Greenland wholeheartedly supports the idea of joining the USA. This is alarming, as it resembles Kremlin propaganda videos about the 'Russian Donbas' or 'Russian Crimea.'

It is highly likely that this was precisely the effect the PR team of Trump Jr. aimed to achieve. They seemingly suggest to the audience that if it is acceptable for Russia to annex territories, then it is even more permissible and necessary for the United States.

Meanwhile, Danish authorities have prepared a response, which is just as provocative as the content of Trump Jr.'s video. The PR team of Donald Trump Jr. may have bribed homeless and socially vulnerable residents of Greenland to show their support during his visit to the island, reports the Danish public broadcaster DR, citing sources.

Some of those appearing in the video are actually homeless and socially vulnerable people who often gather outside supermarkets in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. On social media, Trump referred to them as the “local population of Nuuk.”

Trump has shown that territorial claims in Europe are not only the domain of the marginalized

Danish response is trolling back at the trolling from Trump Jr. Thus, it escalates. Typically, escalation leads to conflict, including armed conflict. However, as Politico writes, if an armed conflict over Greenland were to occur, it would become the shortest war in history.

Danish military resources have been significantly depleted as they were allocated to support Ukraine. They lack the means to counter a potential annexation of Greenland by the USA.

Even if Trump discusses the potential annexation of Greenland to the USA not entirely seriously, his statements resonate warmly with Russians and their sympathizers.

“The southern part of the Odessa region should return to Bulgaria; most of its population consists of Bulgarians,” says the leader of the pro-Russian Bulgarian party “Revival” Kostadinov. “Ukraine is disintegrating, and at the upcoming peace congress, which will determine the fate of the so-called Ukrainian statehood that never materialized, Bulgaria should assert its claims to Bulgarian Bessarabia.”

Is it not the Trumps—senior and junior—who inspire such statements? At the very least, such remarks have noticeably increased following the chosen president of the USA sharing his ideas regarding Greenland and Canada.

“All Baltic countries should belong to Russia; the Lithuanian army cannot withstand even a day against the RF,” says Russian deputy Zhuravlyov, seemingly influenced by Trump’s statements.

What has Trump essentially done? He has demonstrated that territorial disputes in the post-war world (and even in post-war Europe, where Denmark is located) are not solely the concern of marginalized figures like Putin.

Even the United States may seek a piece of the pie. Other countries or politicians who sense the political climate faster than others may also anticipate similar opportunities. Apparently, Mr. Kostadinov has already sensed the political climate.

Revising existing borders is indeed Putin's plan

It is well known that Russia has been planning aggression against Ukraine for many years. As early as 2014, it proposed to the governments of Hungary, Poland, and Romania to divide the western regions of Ukraine among themselves. The same proposal was reiterated by Russian agents of influence at the onset of the full-scale aggression in 2022.

All those proposals were officially rejected. However, not all politicians from the mentioned countries truly dismissed them. Radical right-wing parties in Central European countries still dream of acquiring parts of Ukraine. For instance, in Romania, this was stated in 2023 by ultra-right senator Diana Sosoaca.

Sosoaca even submitted a draft bill to the parliament concerning Romania's annexation of “historical territories that belonged to it, namely: Northern Bukovina, Hertsa, Budjak (Cahul, Bolhrad, Izmail), historical Maramureș, and Snake Island.”

It is worth noting that in Romania, due to hybrid interference from Russia, the Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first round of elections. The decision was made after intelligence data regarding the ultra-right candidate Kelin Georgescu, who received the most votes, was published on TikTok, along with his alleged connections to Putin. A rerun of the elections will take place in the spring.

Military Intelligence warned about this, but no one believed

On November 22 of last year, the spokesperson for the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Vadym Skibitsky, revealed a new Russian plan, stating that Ukraine should be divided into three parts: one that will enter the RF (the south and part of the east), a second part ruled by a pro-Russian or neutral government, and the third part, the west, was labeled “disputed territories.” At that time, it seemed absurd.

Даремно втішаєтеся! Інтерес Трампа до Гренландії - це вкрай погано для України: пояснимо, чому 1

It truly seemed absurd in a world where Biden was the president of the USA. But in a world where Trump has been elected in the USA, and he covets Greenland and Canada, it becomes a harsh reality. This is precisely why Trump’s statements are so dangerous, even if they are merely jokes or attempts to gauge public opinion.

By the way, Trump is well aware of how people react to the annexation of new territories. They celebrate, and the president's ratings soar. This suggests to Trump the rise in President Putin's ratings following the annexation of Crimea.

Earlier, Informator reported that Greenland is not an empty whim of Trump. It is needed by the United States for future confrontations with China.
