In Sumy region, the first underground school has been established. It was constructed in one of the communities in the Okhtyrka district. The facility can be used for both educational purposes and civil protection. Notably, it includes radiation protection.
This was reported by the OVA. The shelter is designed to accommodate 295 people. The construction was completed at the end of last year.
"This is the first dual-purpose radiation shelter we have built in an educational institution in our region. Today, we are doing everything possible to ensure that our children can move away from remote learning and study in a mixed or in-person format. Two more underground schools of this type are under construction in the regional center so that students can continue their education even during alerts," said Volodymyr Artyukh, head of the Sumy OVA.
The project was implemented through co-financing. Specifically, 29.4 million UAH was allocated from the state budget, while the community contributed an additional 1.6 million UAH.
In December, Sumy region became the leader in terms of the number and duration of air alerts. Overall, in December 2024, the total duration of air alerts in the region amounted to 15 days and 5 hours, making it the leader in this unfortunate statistic for the month.
According to the "Air Alert" service, 115 air alerts were declared in Sumy region in December, with an average duration of 2 hours and 37 minutes. Media outlets reported explosions in the region at least 23 times.
Essentially, this is the price for the Kursk operation. The Russians are furious and are not only actively terrorizing the local population but are also trying to locate and weaken the Armed Forces of Ukraine units that are transiting through Sumy region towards Kursk.
We remind you that "Informator" once wrote an extensive report on the evacuation in Sumy region. A real hell began in the region after the Armed Forces of Ukraine's Kursk operation. The enemy is hitting with everything they have in their arsenal: artillery, KABs, missiles, and Shahed drones. In a significant part of Sumy region, not just in the border areas, living has become impossible. Therefore, evacuation measures have been announced in localities across the region. Sometimes evacuations occur forcibly, especially when it comes to families with children.
