Ukrainian forces resumed offensive operations in at least three areas of the Ukrainian salient in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, achieving tactical successes on January 5. The Armed Forces of Ukraine conducted several mechanized assaults of approximately company size. Ukrainians attacked towards Berdyn-Novosotnytskyi (northeast of Suja) in three waves, utilizing about a battalion of armored vehicles.
Reports on new successes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Kursk were provided by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Analysts emphasize that Ukrainian forces have intensified their offensive actions towards Leonidovo (southeast of Korenevo) and executed a reinforced mechanized assault the size of a platoon near Pushkarny (east of Suja). Geolocated footage published on January 5 indicates that Ukrainian forces advanced into the fields southwest and south of Berdyn, entering the southern part of this settlement.
Russian military bloggers released updated operational maps for the Kursk area, showing that Ukrainian forces have also occupied the settlements of Cherkasky Porichny, Martynivka, and Mykhailivka (all northeast of Suja and southwest of Berdyn) as of January 5. They also reported that Ukrainian forces recently entered Novosotnytskyi (directly east of Berdyn) and advanced into the fields west of Yamskaya Stepa (directly northwest of Berdyn) and west of Nova Sorochyna (north of Suja and northwest of Berdyn).
Russian military bloggers reported that Ukrainian forces also conducted offensive operations near Nikolskyi and Oleksandriya (respectively east and southeast of Leonidovo) and north of Ruska Konopelka (east of Suja) towards Pushkarny with small infantry groups. However, they did not provide details regarding the scale of potential Ukrainian troop advancements in these areas.
Overall, Russian military bloggers expressed concern that the renewed Ukrainian activities in the Kursk region could be a diversionary maneuver, stating that it is still too early to determine whether these operations in Kursk could be part of a future major offensive.
On January 5, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched an offensive in the Suja district of the Kursk region of Russia. Ukrainian troops are advancing towards Velykyi Soldatskyi — a direction previously considered difficult for attack by the Russians. It is known that the Ukrainian army is utilizing a significant amount of equipment for the assault.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation commented on the Armed Forces of Ukraine's offensive in the Kursk region. The Russian agency referred to it as a "counterattack to halt the advance of Russian troops."
Meanwhile, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that on January 5, there were 42 combat clashes in the Kursk region, 12 of which are still ongoing. In total, since the beginning of the day, 114 combat clashes have occurred at the front.
