In Ukraine, a case against scammers from Dnipro has been submitted to court for stealing money from the bank accounts of deceased servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They managed to embezzle nearly 1.5 million hryvnias. The men face up to eight years in prison.
On January 3, the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Prosecutor's Office reported this. The investigation revealed that the accused, involving an employee of the forensic bureau, stole SIM cards and mobile phones from the deceased Ukrainian soldiers at the morgue.
Among the group members was an IT specialist. He changed passwords and gained full access to the online banking of the fallen soldiers. Subsequently, the accused withdrew cash, took out loans in the names of the deceased, and transferred money to their own accounts.
A total of 20 victims are already known. The total amount of damages exceeds 1.5 million hryvnias.
Law enforcement uncovered five men aged between 27 and 42. Among them are an employee of the forensic bureau, an IT specialist who hacked into the banking applications of the fallen soldiers, and a repeat offender with a prior conviction. Currently, all of them are in custody.
The case has already been forwarded to court. They are charged with theft, fraud, and unauthorized interference in the operation of information (automated) systems (Part 3 of Article 28, Part 5 of Article 185, Part 5 of Article 190, Part 5 of Article 361 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The accused face up to 8 years behind bars.
On July 9, 2024, it became known that in Dnipro, a group of criminals was stealing money from the accounts of fallen soldiers. To do this, they stole SIM cards and mobile phones of deceased Ukrainian servicemen from morgues. In total, they managed to embezzle 1.5 million hryvnias. Among the five defendants are a morgue employee, an IT specialist, and a criminal authority.
The fraudsters appealed the arrest. Later, after the detention, it was reported that only the detained IT specialist might remain in custody. Initially, the IT specialist was assigned a bail of 300,000 UAH, which he paid and was released from custody. However, the prosecutor's office succeeded in having him returned to custody. His bail was increased fivefold - to 1.5 million UAH. Other suspects also attempted to secure their release.
