A new weapons package worth $500 million is set to be announced tomorrow, January 9, during the meeting of the Ukraine Contact Group at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. American media reports indicate that this will be the final weapons package during Joe Biden's presidency. Approximately $3.8 billion of the program, which allowed for the continued military support for Ukraine, remains unused.
According to the AP agency, this involves the transfer of weapons from American stockpiles rather than the production of new arms. The U.S. plans to deliver this batch of weapons to Ukraine by the end of January.
"Voice of America" also noted that this will be the last aid package from the current administration of President Joe Biden. Additionally, around $3.8 billion from the PDA program will remain unused, despite the White House's promises to expend the entire amount before the end of Biden's term. These funds will become available to the elected president Donald Trump after his inauguration on January 20, according to Pentagon officials.
On January 9, Germany will host another meeting of the Contact Group in the Ramstein format. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to attend – he announced this in an evening address. He mentioned that Ukraine anticipates the key outcome from this meeting: enhancing air defense systems to help deter Russian aviation from Ukrainian cities. Zelensky also stated that discussions at "Ramstein" will focus on how Ukraine's defense coalitions with partners will continue operating in 2025.
The previous aid package from the U.S. worth $1.25 billion, which was provided on December 30, included missiles and ammunition, anti-tank Javelins, grenades, and demolition equipment. It also included communication equipment, software, components, and clothing.
