The upcoming eight weeks leading to the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump will be the most challenging period in Ukraine's history since 1991. This was stated by Ukrainian Ambassador to Brazil Andriy Melnyk in an interview with "Radio Liberty."
The diplomat believes that Ukraine may be forced into "certain decisions." It is clear he is referring to Trump's peace initiative package and his team's proposals. Melnyk urges Ukrainian diplomacy to actively engage with Trump in the near future, as he is currently formulating approaches regarding Ukraine.
"The worst part is that indeed some decisions will be imposed on Ukraine over our heads… When the day of the inauguration arrives, I fear that by then a decision will have already been made, making it more difficult for us," the ambassador expressed.
“Believe me, my feeling is that these eight weeks will be the most responsible and challenging in Ukraine's history since 1991. This means we need to act now.”
The new U.S. administration will not leave Ukraine to fend for itself for various reasons. Melnyk does not believe in the possibility of Ukraine being coerced into peace, as Trump aims to go down in history as one of the most successful U.S. presidents.
"Donald Trump seeks to restore America's glory. I find it hard to believe that America, as the unquestionable leader of the free world, the greatest military power and economic force, would abandon Ukraine and negotiate some rotten compromise with Putin over our heads," the diplomat revealed.
Recall that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on November 23 about the chances of ending the war in Ukraine by 2025. He believes that countries from the Global South will support Ukraine.
Zelensky also mentioned that Ukraine will not legally renounce the territories occupied by Russia since 2014 in exchange for a ceasefire and peace negotiations with Moscow.
