Ukrainian forces have advanced in three areas of the Kursk region, while Russian troops are launching attacks elsewhere, according to ISW (map).

Ukrainian forces have reached the center of two settlements in the Kursk region, as confirmed by video evidence. Meanwhile, Russian military bloggers are unable to substantiate claims of "successes" on a neighboring section of the front.

In the Kursk region, the advance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) continues, with certain successes reported by Ukrainian units to the northeast of Sudja. Footage from the scene confirms the presence of Ukrainians in three localities, although the command of the Defense Forces has yet to report on the situation. Meanwhile, the Russian Armed Forces are attacking to the northwest of Sudja, claiming that they have shifted the frontline, but no evidence has been found to support this. Current events in the Kursk region as of January 7 were reported on the portal of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

AFU Offensive – What Happened Near Kursk on January 6

Analysts summarized publications from OSINT analysts on the social network X (Twitter), who conducted geolocation of footage from the Kursk region. The geolocation indicated that AFU armored vehicles have reached the village of Novosotnitskoye (possible coordinates 51.316935695091054, 35.42508908971238). Other footage shows a fire following a Ukrainian strike on a Russian hideout in the same village at coordinates 51.315575, 35.448614.

The ISW report noted that the AFU has tactical successes in the area they chose for the offensive. In particular, Ukrainians are present in three locations: on the southern outskirts of Berdina, in the center of Russkiy Porichny (5 km west of Berdina), and in the center of Novosotnitskoye (1 km east).

At the same time, attempts at offensive actions by the Russian Armed Forces continue in another segment of the Kursk front— to the northwest of Sudja, near the village of Malaya Loknya and surrounding settlements. Geolocation confirmed that the Russians are achieving successes near Malaya Loknya. On the other hand, military bloggers claim successes in Leonidovo, with advancements in Russkiy Porichny, Makhnovka, Dmitryukovka, Novoivanovka, Viktorovka, and Nikolskoye; however, ISW has not found real confirmations of these claims.

The map published on the analysts' portal shows two active areas near Kursk: on the left—activation of the Russian Armed Forces, on the right—AFU. They also summarized that they cannot accurately predict how events will unfold further. They consider the possibility, for example, that a new Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region could be preparation for another operation on Russian territory or at some point on the eastern front.

It should be noted that on December 6, the Institute for the Study of War analyzed the AFU offensive in the Kursk region, which became known the day before, on January 5. In particular, there has been an intensification of fighting near 11 settlements around Sudja. Additionally, Forbes analysts confirmed that both the AFU and the Russian Armed Forces have intensified their activities, and they cannot determine who initiated first, or who is attacking in response to the enemy's activity.

We remind you that on January 6, the Russian Ministry of Defense showed footage of a strike on a column of tanks, which was later revealed to be Ukrainian forces neutralizing Russian tanks.
