The Presidents of Ukraine and Moldova discussed the humanitarian crisis that has arisen in the Russian-dependent Transnistrian region, where heating has been turned off and issues with electricity and water have emerged. Ukraine is ready to assist Moldova in overcoming the energy crisis by offering to supply Ukrainian coal.
In his evening address, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he spoke with Moldovan President Maia Sandu about tackling the energy crisis. He noted that resolving this issue would prevent Russia from destabilizing the situation on the left bank of the Dniester, where the unrecognized Transnistria is located, and manipulating resources.
"We are ready to help Moldova, particularly with coal. It is very important to maintain stability and provide all people in Moldova with conditions to live peacefully and work for their country, to overcome poverty and to advance our joint movement towards the EU," he said.
As is known, Russian Gazprom suspended gas exports to Moldova starting January 1, citing unpaid debts. Meanwhile, in the Russian-occupied Transnistria, heating and hot water were turned off for the population on Wednesday, January 1. This coincided with Ukraine halting the transit of Russian gas across its territory.
In his evening address, the president also mentioned that he proposed Switzerland join in supplying food to the Syrian people. In his view, this would help stabilize the situation in Syria, which has long been under Russian influence.
"Ukrainian food and Switzerland's financial participation – together with our other partners in this humanitarian program. This can help the people of Syria restore normal life after the war and, importantly, after Russia's involvement in Syria," Zelensky stated.
It is known that the first official contact between Ukraine and the new Syrian government took place on December 30. An official Ukrainian delegation visited Damascus at that time. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha held talks with representatives of the new Syrian leadership, including the head of the administration, Ahmed al-Sharaa.
