Approximately 30 individuals were injured in an accident involving a ski lift at the Astun ski resort in the Pyrenees. The incident occurred on Saturday morning. According to Spanish media reports, one of the buckles at the end of the lift malfunctioned. As a result, witnesses reported that the seats began to sway violently up and down, with some even striking the ground.
It has been reported that nine of the injured are in very critical condition, while eight others are in serious condition.
Four helicopters from Zaragoza, Teruel, the Civil Guard, and Navarra were deployed for emergency assistance. One woman, considered the most critically injured patient, was airlifted to Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza.
The 061 emergency service mobilized significant medical resources, including 24 basic life support units, five mobile intensive care units, three advanced life support units with medical personnel, and 14 regular ambulances. Additionally, a field medical center was established at the site of the incident.
Hospitals in the region are prepared to receive the injured, including those in Jaca, Huesca, Miguel Servet, University Clinic, Royo Villanova, and Barbastro . If necessary, additional medical staff can be dispatched to the scene.
The ski resort has been fully evacuated and closed. The President of Aragon, Jorge Ascon, along with Regional Minister Roberto Bermudez de Castro, went to the site of the accident to oversee the rescue operations and assist the victims.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also expressed his support, stating, "I am shocked by the news of the accident at the #Astun station. I spoke with the President of Aragon, Jorge Ascon, to offer him the full support of the government. All our love and sympathy goes to the victims and their families."
The operation to manage the emergency response also involves the Civil Guard, civil defense volunteers, and civil protection technicians from the Aragon government.
